Catherine Alvarez victory party draws police visit over noise complaints
DOWNEY — A victory celebration for councilwoman-elect Catharine Alvarez drew a visit from Downey police over the weekend.
Alvarez’s rally took place on Sunday in front of the Eden Roc Apartment complex on Western Avenue.
The event was publicized live by the Downey Tenants Union – which Alvarez founded - on Facebook. It included a large gathering of people, speeches, music, drums, and dancing.
According to an official with knowledge of the situation, a warning was given to Alvarez but no citation was issued. Police were not called back to the area after leaving.
Though results are not final, Alvarez is poised to claim the city’s District 3 council seat. She replaces Rick Rodriguez, who opted not to run for reelection due to health concerns.
Alvarez did not reply to a call for comment.
