Volunteer raising money for African trip

DOWNEY – Downey resident Bert Garcia is trying to raise $5,000 for a missionary trip to Africa. Garcia has already collected $2,130, according to his Go Fund Me page. He will be traveling with a small team from La Vina Centro Cristiano, a Downey-based church.

“We will be volunteering in Pemba at the Village of Joy, rebuilding homes (due to the recent extreme floodings), providing sustainable food sources, doing outreaches… teaching, helping with building and construction projects, administrative work projects, assisting in the medical clinic, helping in the dorms, sorting donations, organizing events, and getting involved with children’s activities,” Garcia wrote. “Each of these things are important to their growth and survival as a community.”
