The View

Dear Editor: A little background info, then my complaint.

I lived in Downey, raised my three children there. Eleven years ago, the children grown and out of the house and by myself, I decided to sell my house and move to a mobile home park. There being none in Downey, I moved into a lovely lake park in La Habra.

Unfortunately all my ties, church, organizations, etc. were still in Downey. So for the last 11 years I was travelling, 3-5 times a week (28 miles round trip). I spent two-thirds of my 87 years in Downey. The time had come for me to move back to Downey.

So, good fortune. A nice big apartment complex was being built right in the heart of Downey. I called for info on this and waited. The info I received was 2 and 3 bedroom affordable apartments with a rec room.” finally, Oct. 3, 9 a.m., I come pick up an application. Downey View Apartment people were there passing out the sheets. What I read on these papers was indeed disheartening.

Thirty-four 2-bedroom apartments for 2-5 people ranging in monthly rent from $513 to $819. Fifteen 3-bedroom apartments for 3-7 persons, monthly rent ranging from $590-$1,018. But I was told I couldn’t live there -- I was one person.

The general public had no knowledge of this stipulation. Why?

I will find an apartment in Downey better than this. Shame on Downey for allowing this kind of project to be built and deceiving the residents about it.
