Poet Sharon Alexander to read work

DOWNEY – This month’s edition of Poetry Matters – Thursday, June 12, at Stay Gallery – features poet Sharon Alexander. Born and raised in New York, she moved to California to attend college. She was a marriage and family therapist, and later worked as a contract administrator in music, film and television.

Her recently released debut chapbook, “Voodoo Trombone,” examines love, sex, grief and time.

“I hover before / your dark gauntlet,” she writes in “Falconer, a poem of desire and rivalry.

Poetry Matters is free and open to the public. Doors open at 7 p.m., and there is an open mic at 7:30.

Stay Gallery is at 11140 Downey Ave., across from Porto’s Bakery.
