Host city Downey plans volunteer effort

DOWNEY – With Downey now an official host city for the 2014 Special Olympics World Games, officials have set a Sept. 4 planning meeting to coordinate the large-scale volunteer effort. The meeting is from 3:30-5 p.m. at the Barbara J. Riley Community and Senior Center.

Downey will host up to 125 Special Olympic athletes next summer, plus their families and trainers. As a host city, Downey will provide accommodations, training facilities and transportation to local attractions.

City officials are counting on local service clubs, businesses and residents to help in the effort.

“Due to the large commitment of being an official Host Town we are inviting any Downey organization, business or resident that may be interested in supporting or volunteering their time for a worthy cause to this planning meeting,” officials said.
