DOWNEY – A two-alarm kitchen fire damaged at least two Downtown Downey restaurants early Sunday morning, forcing their temporary closures.

The flames were reported at around 4:30 a.m. Sunday at Peking China restaurant, located at 11039 Downey Ave.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to Peking although adjacent businesses suffered ceiling and wall damage as firefighters searched for flames.

No injuries were reported, said Downey fire chief Dan Hurlock.

Peking restaurant and Bastards Canteen both closed this week due to the damage. Bastards started a GoFundMe to help staff members who are now out of work one week before Christmas.

“Unfortunately, our staff now have to face a hardship that is going to greatly impact their lives, as they will no longer have a pay check to rely on while we wait to open our doors again,” said Nick Velez, owner of Bastards. “We considered our staff family and therefore are asking for the community that they enjoyed serving so much to give what they can during this unexpected time. Our staff would greatly appreciate any help you can will go towards ensuring they are taken care of as well.”

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
