Downey Rose Float will “Bee” ready come New Years Parade
DOWNEY - With just two weeks to go, The Downey Rose Float Association are working like a bunch of busy bees in preparation for the annual Rose Parade.
In line with Pasadena Tournament of Roses 2023 parade theme “Turning the Corner,” Downey’s float “Bee Inspired” will highlight the struggle and resurgence of the bee population, once in decline.
The float was designed by Jason Redfox, who himself was inspired by his wife’s own beehives.
“Recently, our bee populations have been not getting smaller, just because people are now beginning to realize that a lot of our fruits and vegetables rely on bees,” said Redfox. “So, this was just kind of a way for me to let people know, ‘Don’t be afraid, bees are cool.’”
Construction Chair Kelley Roberts described the float as “very floral,” depicting honey comb, strawberries and animated bee elements.
In particular, the bees are anticipated to be “totally realistic,” according to Redfox.
Miss Downey Sarah Sarofeem and her court will be riding.
Downey Rose Float President Jeremy Clifton expressed excitement and enthusiasm for the parade.
“I’m looking forward to seeing this thing go down the parade route in Pasadena, and hopefully we can win some kind of trophy,” said Clifton.
Starting Monday, Dec. 26, residents are invited to come decorate the float at the Rose Float Association barn, located at 13030 Erickson Ave.
Due to New Years Day landing on a Sunday next year, the Rose Parade will take place on Monday, Jan 2.
