Trujillo confirms he is running for re-election
DOWNEY – Mayor Mario Trujillo has confirmed his intent to run for a second term.
In an appearance on the “Nacho Said So Podcast” posted this week, Trujillo – who is currently in the final year of his first term – was asked if he would pursue another four years on the city council.
“Yes, I’ve decided to run,” said Trujillo. “I gave it a lot of thought, to be honest, because at first I had a really hard time dealing with all the politics – I’m going to leave it at that – of it all. I was just really disappointed in some areas.”
Trujillo said it was “the new team” that swayed him to seek reelection.
“We have an entire new team – department heads across the board from city manager on down – and I’m really excited,” said Trujillo. “Change is scary for some people, especially when you’re doing well, right? If it’s not broke, why fix it? But can you make it better? And I want to make it better.”
Trujillo was elected in 2020 and selected as mayor in December. His first four years have focused primarily on what he calls his “BRASS plan,” tackling infrastructure.
He was one of three councilmembers – alongside former councilmembers Sean Ashton and Catherine Alvarez – connected to the attempted dismissal of city manager Gilbert Livas in December 2021. Livas ultimately retired in June the following year.
