“Tip A Cop” event

Several Downey Police officers donated their own time and were waiters and waitresses at the Downey Johnny Carinos last Thursday in the annual “Tip A Cop” event. “We were able to raise over $3,000 in tips which is our highest total to date,” said Cpl. Mike Pope, president of the Downey Policers Officers Association. “The restaurant was crowded from start to finish and were helped out by many of the Special Olympic athletes and representatives as well.

“Some dignitaries came to eat and support us as well. Carl Charles, the Chief of Police, was joined by both captains as well as the city manager and councilmen. Several staff from the Downey Unified School District came and enjoyed dinner as well. My own children also came and helped out as they look forward to it every year as well.

“It’s a great event that we all look forward to every year. We take pride in our City and love spending time helping out people that really need it. Being able to meet and participate with the Special Olympic athletes in this event was a great experience for all involved.

“It’s so nice to interact with the great people from the City of Downey in this atmosphere and I personally want to thank everyone who took time out of their day to come hang out with us and support such a worthy cause.”
