Sports Briefs: Baseball's regular season coming to an end

DOWNEY – The Downey High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 12-13 and are 6-1 in S.G.V.L. play. The Vikings won both games against cross-town rival Warren last week 8-6 at Warren on 4/26 and 2-0 at Downey on 4/29.

Downey was defeated by Gahr (20-5, 7-0) at Gahr 6-1 on Tuesday and will host the Gladiators later today in their much anticipated rematch. The Vikings will close out their regular season league schedule when they host Paramount (16-11, 4-3) on 5/10 and when they travel to Paramount on 5/12.

Gahr is currently in first place with a league record of 7-0. Downey is currently in second place with a record of 6-1, Paramount is currently in third place with a record of 4-3, Lynwood is currently tied for fourth place with Warren at 2-5 and Dominguez is currently in sixth place with a record of 0-7. 

If Downey can defeat Gahr later today and sweep Paramount next week the Vikings will earn the top S.G.V.L. seed for the C.I.F. Division 1 playoffs.

The Downey High School softball team currently has an overall record of 14-13 and are 5-3 in S.G.V.L. play. 

The Lady Vikings defeated Dominguez at Dominguez 14-0 on 4/26, defeated Lynwood at Lynwood 20-0 on 4/28 and were defeated by cross-town rival Warren at Downey 6-0 on Tuesday. Downey will close out their regular season league schedule when they host Gahr on 5/5 and when they travel to Paramount on 5/10.

Gahr is currently in first place with a league record of 8-0. Warren is currently in second place with a record of 6-2, Downey is currently in third place with a record of 5-3, Paramount is currently in fourth place, Lynwood is currently in fifth place and Dominguez is currently in sixth place.

As it stands now, Downey will be the number three entry from the San Gabriel Valley League in the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs behind Gahr and Warren, respectively.

The Warren High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 11-13 and are 2-5 in S.G.V.L. play. 

Warren was defeated by cross-town rival Downey last week 8-6 at Warren on 4/26 and 2-0 at Downey on 4/29. The Bears defeated Dominguez on Tuesday 10-3 at Dominguez and will host the Dons later today.

Warren will conclude their regular season when they host Lynwood next Tuesday and when they travel to Lynwood on Thursday. Coach Pearson, his staff and players are looking forward to finishing their regular season on a win streak and qualify for postseason play. As it stands now, Warren is tied for fourth place with Lynwood and are on the outside looking in. Only the top three league teams earn a line in the C.I.F. Division 1 playoff bracket.

The Warren High School softball team currently has an overall record of 17-7 and are 6-2 in S.G.V.L. play. Warren defeated cross-town rival Downey 6-0 on Tuesday and will conclude their regular season league schedule with a game against Dominguez at Warren Thursday (score unavailable at press time) and when they travel to Lynwood next Tuesday.

As it stands now, Warren will be the number two entry from the San Gabriel Valley League with Gahr (20-5-2, 8-0) earning the number one entry and Downey (14-13, 5-3) earning the number three entry, respectively.

Warren High School alumni Danielle Rodriguez was recently selected to represent team USA basketball in a nine- game, 14-day tournament in China. 

According to Rodriguez’s agent, “there will be a ton of WNBA and international scouts in attendance.” Coach Palmer is extremely proud of Danielle’s great news and outstanding accomplishment.

The Downey High School boys’ swim team is seeking their fifth straight S.G.V.L. title as all league teams competed against each other yesterday (results unavailable at press time). 
Downey swim is undefeated in dual meet competition. Downey defeated Gahr 101-41, defeated cross-town rival Warren 112-58  and defeated Paramount 139-40. San Gabriel Valley League preliminaries started Tuesday and Finals were held yesterday.

Outstanding swims against Warren were turned in by Tim Nilan who swam a 22.67 in the 50 yard freestyle and 49.67 in the 100 yard freestyle. Freshman Nathan Lopez swam a 1:06 in the 100 breaststroke and sophomore Angel Lira swam a 5:11 in the 500 freestyle.

Junior Marcus Powell swam a 2:08 in the 200 yard Individual Medley and the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Tim Nilan, Marcus Powell, Angel Lira and Thomas Erling finished in a time of 3:29.

Coach Delhousay and his staff are extremely proud of how well his swimmers have swam thus far. The results at yesterday’s league finals will determine who competes in what events in postseason competition. The Downey swimmers  are looking forward to the start of postseason swim.

The fifth and final sport season for middle school sports will start next Thursday when Doty, Griffiths, Stauffer and Sussman will begin their much anticipated track and field competitions.
Doty will compete against Stauffer at Downey next Thursday and Griffiths will compete against Sussman at Warren.

Stauffer will compete against Sussman at Downey on 5/19 and Doty will compete against Griffiths at Warren.

Griffiths will compete against Stauffer on 5/26 at Warren and Doty will compete against Sussman at Downey.

The All-City track and field championships will be held on Friday, June 3, at Downey High School. All schools will be competing against each other.

The champions trophy for most city championships currently belongs to Doty. The Knights claimed 19 city championships last year and currently lead this year’s competitions with 10. Four of five sports rotations have been completed thus far with track and field season beginning next week. 

Stauffer is currently second with seven city championships, Griffiths is currently third with five city championships and Sussman is currently fourth with three city championships. Track offers six city championships for boy’s and girl’s teams in each grade level. Sports
