Sports Briefs: 2/28/20

DOWNEY — The Downey High School baseball team currently has an overall record 0-3 and will begin San Gabriel Valley League play when they travel to Paramount on March 6th.

The Vikings are currently competing in the Loara Tournament. Downey was defeated by Aliso Viejo 11-2 on February 20th, was defeated by Villa Park 4-3 on February 21st and was defeated by Ocean View 2-1 in eight innings on Tuesday.

The Vikings will continue to play in the Loara Tournament this weekend. Downey had a game scheduled yesterday against Sonora (score unavailable at press time) as well as a game scheduled for tomorrow against a to be determined opponent based on tournament results.

Downey will travel to Pacifica on March 3rd and will begin league play at Paramount on March 6th. The Vikings will then host Cerritos at Downey on March 9th, will travel to Carson on March 11th, will host Gahr on March 13th, will travel to Lynwood on March 18th and will host cross-town rival Warren at Downey on March 20th.

The Vikings finished last season with an overall record of 14-13-1 and a S.G.V.L. record of 7-3. Downey finished in a second-place tie with Warren, who also finished at 7-3. Gahr was the league champion at 8-2, respectively. Downey was defeated by at Saugus Saugus 3-2 in eight innings in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs. Coach Gonzalez, his staff and players are all looking forward to the 2020 baseball season.

The Downey High School girls’ softball team currently has an overall record of 2-1 and will begin San Gabriel Valley League play when they travel to Gahr on March 24th. The Lady Vikings defeated Esperanza at Downey 8-7 on February 20th, defeated La Mirada at La Mirada 5-4 on February 25th and were defeated by Chino Hills at Chino Hills 13-1 on February 26th. Downey hosted a double header against South Torrance yesterday at 3: 15 p.m. and at 5:15 p.m. (scores unavailable at press time).

The Lady Vikings will compete in the Best of the West Tournament this weekend at Pacifica High School and are scheduled to play Beckman at 11:30 a.m. and Marina at 1:30 p.m. Downey is also scheduled to play in the Mojave Tournament March 5th-7th. The Lady Vikings will open league play against defending league champion Gahr at Gahr on March 24th, will host Paramount at Downey on March 26th and will compete in the La Mirada Tournament on March 28th.

Downey will then travel to Dominguez to play the Lady Dons on March 31st, will host Lynwood at Downey on April 2nd and will travel to cross-town rival Warren on April 7th. The Lady Vikings finished last season with an overall record of 18-14 and were 8-2 in S.G.V.L. play. Downey was eliminated by Rio Mesa at Downey 4-0 in the second round of the C.I.F. Division 2 playoffs. Coach Garcia, his staff and players are all looking forward to the 2020 softball season.

The Warren High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 5-1 and will begin San Gabriel Valley League play when they host Gahr at Warren on March 17th. The Bears split a double header at Warren against Troy on February 15th. Warren was defeated in the first game 6-2 at 9:15 a.m. and defeated Troy 4-2 at 12:00 p.m. in the second game. Warren defeated Whittier 10-3 at Warren on February 20th and defeated West Covina at West Covina 11-1 on February 22nd.

Warren defeated Portola at Warren 16-0 on February 24th and defeated Anaheim at Warren 13-0 on February 26th. The Bears are currently enjoying a five-game win streak. Warren is scheduled to play El Rancho at Warren on March 4th in the “Dons vs. Bears Family Night,” will travel to Roosevelt on March 7th, will host Gahr at Warren on March 17th, will travel to cross-town rival Downey on March 20th and will travel to Paramount on March 31st.

The Bears finished last season with an overall record of 24-8 and a S.G.V.L. record of 7-3. Warren finished tied for second place with Downey, respectively and Gahr was the league champion at 8-2. Warren was defeated by La Canada 2-1 in nine innings in the second round of the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs. Coach Pearson, his staff and players are all looking forward to the start of the 2020 baseball season.

The Warren High School girls’ softball team currently has an overall record of 2-2 and will begin San Gabriel Valley League play when they travel to Dominguez to play the Lady Dons on March 24th. The Bears competed in the Savannah Tournament on February 15th where they split a double header. Warren was defeated by Norco 7-0 in the first game at 9:00 a.m. and defeated South Hills 3-2 in the second game at 3:00 p.m.

Warren defeated Mayfair at Mayfair 10-7 on February 18th and was defeated by La Serna 8-7 on Tuesday. The Bears played Artesia at Artesia yesterday (score unavailable at press time) and will host El Rancho at Warren on March 3rd. Warren will then travel to Mira Costa on March 5th, will compete in the Savannah Tournament on March 9th and is scheduled to host a double header at Warren against Kennedy at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on March 12th.

Warren finished last season with an overall record of 15-15 and a S.G.V.L. record of 6-4. Warren finished in third place behind Gahr (10-0) and Downey (8-2), respectively. The Bears were defeated by West Ranch at Warren 14-1 in the quarterfinal round of the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs. Warren defeated Chino Hills at Chino Hills 14-3 in the first round and defeated Sierra Canyon at Warren 5-2 in the second round to advance. Coach Starksen, her staff and players are all looking forward to the 2020 softball season.
