Mildred Kullbom passes away

DOWNEY – Longtime Downey resident Mildred Anne (Millie) Kullbom passed away March 4 at the Newport Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility. She was born to Irish Italian parents, John and Rebecca Martone, in Wilmington, Del., on Sept. 30, 1921. She had one sister, Marie.

Millie graduated from the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1942, where she met a young intern named Dr. Kenneth Kullbom, from Iowa. They were married on June 25, 1943.

Millie gave birth to daughters Betty and Patty at Fort McPherson U.S. Army Base in Atlanta, where Ken was stationed during WWII.

Ken and Millie moved to Downey in 1953 where she gave birth to their third daughter, Judy. They bought a home in 1960 where she resided until January 2013.

Millie retired from Whittier Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital after 25 years of service as a nursing supervisor.

She leaves behind three daughters, Betty Mac Kenzie, Patty Bolen and Judy Velasquez and their spouses, Robert Bolen and David Velasquez, along with her stepson Steven Kullbom and his wife Sheila. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Kim, Bobby, Michael, Matthew, John, Mary Louise, Lauren and Daniel, along with five great-grandchildren, Kyle, Karlie, Brayden, Matix and Maxon, along with other family members.

Services took place March 12 at Rose Hills Memorial Park. Her final resting place will be at the Sky Rose Terrace.
