Man suffers 'significant hand injury' lighting illegal fireworks
DOWNEY — The Downey Fire Department treated a man who suffered a “significant hand injury” lighting illegal fireworks, officials said.
Authorities said the injury occurred several days after July 4. The person was transported to a hospital for treatment. No other details were available.
Firefighters put out 10 fires on July 4, including six dumpsters that ignited after fireworks were improperly disposed. Two vehicles caught fire, as did two trees.
Downey police officers issued 30 fireworks-related citations July 4. Each citation carries a $2,000 fine.
According to Sgt. Maria Villegas, Downey Police responded to 143 fireworks-related calls for service between 6 pm and 2 am. Police administered 30 administrative citations for illegal firework violations, each for $2,000.
