Letters to the Editor: Gun debate

Dear Editor:

I agree with U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris’s comment on the recent spate of mass shootings.

Why do the gun enthusiasts even need AR-15 assault rifles? To go hunting? For what? A deer?

After you pumped 60 or 70 high-caliber rounds into it, you would probably be left with little more than a steaming pile of hamburger.

Dear Editor:

Despite the tragedy at the Walmart in El Paso, Texas, the store is going to continue to sell guns and ammunition.

I guess making a profit is more important than showing respect to the people who died.

Dear Editor:

Obviously Froma Harrop was too quick to write an article condemning “good men with guns.”(“Good Men with Guns Won’t Protect Us,” 8/8/19) Especially with the most recent attempt by yet another lunatic to shoot up a Walmart in Missouri.

In this latest incident, an off-duty fireman who was shopping, held a heavily armed shooter at gun point until police arrived. Luckily, no shots were fired and no one was hurt. Lucky for all that this “good man” had a carry permit and was in the right place at the right time.

It is interesting to note how quickly the gunman surrendered. Obviously he expected helpless people to be his targets but instead found himself at the wrong end of a gun.

Good, responsible citizens, men and women, can defend themselves and others when allowed to carry concealed weapons after undergoing a basic level of training.

Dear Editor:

“Good men with guns won’t protect us.” That is the most ignorant statement written by a liberal columnist (Froma Harrop) that lives in the posh area of NYC.

The way to stop a bad man with a gun is to have a good man with a gun. This is absolutely true. Who else is going to stop the bad man? Another bad man?

When seconds count, the police are minutes away. An officer/deputy is dispatched after the 911 call is received. Their response time is dictated by availability, time, distance, traffic and weather. Don’t blame the officers.

Gun free zones do not work. If a good man (citizen with a concealed carry weapon) was allowed to carry in the GFZ, the bad guy could have stopped sooner. There will be casualties because the bad guy determines when he will attack. Don’t say there were casualties because of the evil AR-15. A semi auto pistol would have done the same damage at close range.

Another dumb statement Froma was that she would prefer a psychotic man without a gun than a good man with one. Well, who is going to stop the psycho? The psychotic will buy or steal a gun regardless of the law. Does Froma know that knives are carried by all criminals. Look at all the innocent victims that were sliced and gutted walking on Hollywood Boulevard or around homeless areas.

Citizens in good standing in California should be allowed to conceal carry if they wish. But this is California, home of the violent gangs and criminals. It’s impossible to obtain a CCW in L.A. County and L.A. City. Only the rich and famous can carry because their lives are more important than yours.

The Supreme Court ruled that law enforcement has no obligation to protect you. You are your first responder to protect yourself and your loved ones. That is why it’s called self defense.

Dear Editor:

Froma Harrop was absolutely correct that good men with guns won’t protect us. That is a statement of fact attributed to the sheer destruction caused by assault-style rifles.

The shooter in Dayton, Ohio, was armed with a semi-automatic AM-15. According to Dayton Police, law enforcement officers engaged him within 20 seconds of when the shooting started. Within 30 seconds after the shooting started, police had killed the gunman.

In that very brief time period, the gunman killed 10 people and injured 27 others.

It’s the guns.
