Letter to the Editor: Yes, she impeded traffic

Dear Editor:

On Nov. 5, there was a letter to the editor published by Darlene Roberson (“Impeding Traffic?”). Though it may seem ridiculous and unnecessary for the motorcycle officer to have given Darlene a ticket for impeding traffic while already in the middle of a huge bumper to bumper traffic jam, the police officer had all the right to do so.

By law, impeding traffic is typically defined when not operating a vehicle reasonably, so as to block the normal flow of traffic. So when Darlene decided that it was okay for her granddaughter to get out of the car to go to school, in the middle of a traffic jam, she by definition impeded whatever flow the traffic had at that time, technically breaking the law.

Yes, it is understandable why she is frustrated since there were other people doing much worse that morning in the traffic jam, but just because what she did seemed much more minor than the other offenses around her does not make it any less illegal or justified in any way.
