Letter to the Editor: Too old for dance class

Dear Editor:

It does not pay to be old in Downey if you want to take a class offered by the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Downey.

I tried to enroll in a salsa class but I was not allowed because the class only accepts people older than 18 and younger than 55. My mother celebrated her 102nd birthday dancing tango so age should not be an issue for a dancing class.

I also tried to sign up for the meditation and basic yoga class but it is limited for people older than 18 and younger than 50. Nobody told the Parks and Recreation Department that yoga is well known for helping older adults maintain cognitive skills.

Even though I am an old man, I never saw that as a handicap until I tried to register for a class in Downey.
