Jacobs sworn in as Downey Kiwanis president

DOWNEY - Robert Jacobs, partner in the law firm of Jacobs and Vega, was installed as president of the Downey Kiwanis Club during an installation dinner Oct. 2.Also installed were president-elect Tom Houts, vice president Susan Robison, treasurer Jeff Funk and secretary Ashvin Patel. During installation ceremonies, Fernando Vasquez was recognized as "Kiwanian of the Year." Vasquez helped organize the first annual True Lasting Connection (TLC) charity softball tournament earlier this year where Downey service organizations and local high school teachers helped raise money for TLC. TLC helps children and their families who lack basic school supplies, and offers assistance with medical, dental and vision exams. In conjunction with this newspaper, Vasquez helped start the Downey Youth Service Award, a recognition for Downey children who give back to the community through community service. "We have a moral obligation to provide the basic resources for the leaders of tomorrow," Vasquez said. "It's important to inspire, motivate and recognize our future leaders." Downey Kiwanis Club is heavily involved in the community. They hold a monthly barbecue at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, where members cook and serve food to hospital patients. The club sponsors Arc of Southeast Los Angeles County, which provides services and support to people with development disabilities. And in December, the club will host a Christmas event at the La Casita center for homeless women and children, complete with toys and a visit from Santa Claus.
