Downey Youth Service Award

Cristina Carrera and Alexander Foskarino, both students at Warren High School, were recipients of the second annual Downey Youth Service Award, presented by Downey Kiwanis Club and The Downey Patriot on Thursday.Cristina is founder of the Lunch Bunch at Warren High School, a campus club that meets each week with autistic children for lunch and games. She also serves on Link Crew, mentoring incoming freshmen as they make the transition to high school. She volunteers in the Downey Regional Medical Center emergency room every Monday, and has raised more than $300 for the American Cancer Society. Alexander is a Boy Scout who will achieve Eagle Scout status by cleaning up the Nature Center at Whittier Narrows. He has volunteered at Kids Day and hosts get-togethers with WWII veterans. Through the non-profit group REACH LA, he has raised awareness of the dangers of unprotected sex. He is a member of Warren's Key Club and has fed the homeless, picked up trash with Keep Downey Beautiful and washed cars to raise money for Arc of Southeast Los Angeles County.
