Immigration discussion

Dear Editor: I am constantly surprised at the level of hatred some residents express over certain topics.

Not all the candidates I voted for were elected, but I can live with that. I can only hope those elected will do their best, and if they don’t, don’t re-elect them.

I’m not happy that Prop O passed. In the late 90’s a similar proposition passed statewide. Now that I’m retired, at least I don’t have to listen to all the people I worked with complain about their rents being raised!

As for politicians in general, I think there are four traits that all politicians possess:

1.) A genuine concern for the best future of our country

2.) Doing what’s best for all the people in our country

3.) Ego

4.) Crazy as a loon to want the job in the first place.

Hopefully we elect those that are more 1 and 2, and not so much 3 and 4!

Like politics, immigration is one of those issues with a lot of questions and very few answers. What President Obama is doing about immigration is similar, if not exactly, what President George H.W. Bush did in the 80’s.

So that does bring up the actions of past presidents. Where would we be if President George Washington had said, “Enough, close all borders and ports”? Or Lincoln? Maybe one of those Roosevelts?

I don’t think you flee your home country because you feel safe and secure where you are. The unknown is a better choice for some. I am fully aware that letting in the good can result in bad coming through as well. It’s happened in the past and I seriously doubt that it will stop in the future.

There have been many questions asked by some authors of past letters and equally as many criticisms. If there were solid answers for these questions, there would be solutions by now. They are not new questions. Every voter asks them very loudly or quietly depending on which party they are siding with.

I was always told as a kid to never discuss politics or religion. Why? Because no one will ever agree with your views.

I think now we can add immigration to that mix.
