Guerra wants to rename skate park for former mayor

A proposal to rename the city's only skate park after former mayor Meredith Perkins will be considered by the City Council tomorrow.Perkins served on the council from 1998 to 2006, when term limits forced him to step down. He was replaced by Councilman Mario Guerra, who is proposing the skate park's name change. The city has a policy in place when naming city facilities after a person. Requirements include "significant length of service, love of community, impeccable character, positive impact on the community (and) politically retired." "Former Mayor/Council Member Meredith H. Perkins meets the criteria adopted and Independence Skate Park would be an appropriate facility to honor his service to the City," Guerra wrote in a memo to council members. If approved, a plaque would be installed at the skate park, which would be dedicated during a proper ceremony.
