DOWNEY — The Downey Police Department was awarded a $66,540 state grant to help prevent alcoholic beverage sales to minors, the department announced Thursday.

A portion of the funds will also be used to curb alcohol sales to obviously intoxicated people, illegal solicitations of alcohol, and other criminal activities such as the sale and possession of illegal drugs.

The grant was awarded by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC).

Downey police officers and agents from the ABC have already visited several licensed alcohol establishments to educate owners and employees regarding potential violations.
