Downey Historical Society reopens after two-year hiatus

DOWNEY — The Downey Historical Society opened back up to the public on Wednesday after over two years.

The Historical Society, which resides at Apollo Park, originally shut down for the park’s renovations. Though the park has been complete for some time, the Covid-19 pandemic forced the organization to remain closed.

According to President Bob Thompson, the Historical Society took the opportunity to start making some much-needed renovations.

“We’re going forward and doing some wonderful repairs,” said Thompson. “I’m just happy that we’re open and people can come in.”

While closed, Thompson says that The Historical Society still functioned “within the group,” continuing to hold its board meetings and produce its newsletter.

Now, the public can once again visit for tours and for research purposes, however there will be some health and safety protocols – such as masks and limited capacity – still enforced.

Thompson also announced that the organization can now offer tours of the premises in Spanish, with prior request.

He also mentioned that there has been some talk around the possibility of the Paranormal Activity Research Team (PARTeam) – who have done several investigations of the Dismukes House since October of last year – returning to do public paranormal tours, though nothing is currently scheduled.

Over the hiatus, The Historical Society added two recently graduated high school students in Andrea Barajas and Jesus Reyes to its roster of historians. Thompson hopes to draw more of the city’s youth to the organization, with the goal of eventually “passing the baton.”

“It’s very important for the future. I love history; Andrea, Jesus, they love history. Hopefully the youth will grab on,” said Thompson. “One of these days, Bobbi [Bruce] and I are going to have to hand over the baton. Hopefully, it’s to these two folks plus many more.”

“Andrea has contacts at Warren High School, and so does Jesus at Downey, for getting Downey Historical Society known. So, I’m excited for new people to come in; I want so much for young people to come in.”

The Historical Society is open every Wednesday and Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm, as well as every third Saturday. While not necessarily required, calling ahead and making an appointment or reservation is encouraged.
