Downey firefighters recognized for their aid against Los Angeles wildfires

DOWNEY — Fifteen members of the Downey Fire Department were recognized during the city council meeting on Tuesday for helping to combat the Palisades and Eaton wildfires in Los Angeles.

The two fires broke out on Jan. 7 and were declared 100% contained on Jan. 31, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The Palisades fire burned 23,707 acres in the Pacific Palisades, while the Eaton fire scorched 14,021 acres in Altadena/ Pasadena, according to Cal Fire.

Downey Fire Chief Anthony Hildebrand explained on the day the fires broke out, the city fire department sent out two fire engines with four members to help. When the fires kept growing and help was needed for search and rescue, DFD sent more personnel to assist.

“I commend everybody for their efforts to not only serve our region, but also to serving our community,” said Hildebrand. “Regardless of what operation that they were conducting whether it be fighting fire, doing search and rescue operations or providing emergency services here in town, all of DFD demonstrated the mission-driven focus that we’re known for. I’m proud of the work that you guys did.”

The Downey Fire Department leadership, including battalion chief Jorge Villanueva,

Captain Patrick Runyon, Captain Rob Landers, Captain Renick Sampson, and Captain Chris Bohannon each shared their experiences from handling the incidents.

“Our crew showed extreme flexibility and adaptability when getting assigned and assisted in various areas within the fire, including the areas of Mandeville Canyon,” said Runyon. “The loss in the Pacific Palisades area was a surreal experience. Throughout the entire incident and upon our return, we have been very humbled and appreciative of the support we received from the people, communities and businesses across LA County.”

The other fire department staff honored included engineer Corey Lee, engineer Brian Ply, firefighter Carrie Noni, fighter paramedic Anthony Solis, firefighter paramedic Thomas Fosca Rino, firefighter paramedic Corey Gregerson, engineer Freddie Salas, firefighter Mike Hapke, firefighter paramedic Sean Muffet and firefighter paramedic Jeremy Hernandez.
