Crime Report: July 21, 2020
July 13
Detectives are investigating a grand theft that occurred around 12 a.m. at the Downey Unified School District bus yard (12300 block of Woodruff Ave). Officers responded to the bus yard regarding a subject seen on video surveillance stealing diesel fuel. Officers arrived on scene, set up a containment and searched the yard but did not locate any suspects. The suspect used a box truck containing six 300-gallon fuel containers that were almost full. It was later discovered the box truck was reported stolen.
At approximately 3:25 p.m., officers responded to the 7100 block of Firestone Blvd. regarding an attempted robbery. The male suspect approached the male victim in the parking lot, punched him once and attempted to take his wallet. The victim fought back and they became involved in a fight. On-site security responded and the suspect fled W/B on Firestone Blvd. The suspect was located and arrested for attempted robbery.
July 15
At approximately 4:30 p.m., officers responded to the 9900 block of Parrot regarding an apparent suicide. The adult victim, who suffered from depression and health issues, was found hanging in the garage. Family indicated that he attempted suicide days earlier but it was not reported. Downey Fire Department responded and pronounced him deceased. Detectives and Forensics responded to assist with the investigation.
July 16
Detectives are investigating a vehicle burglary that occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. in the 7700 block of Firestone. Unknown suspect(s) broke into a parked U.S. Mail truck. The suspect(s) took an unknown amount of mail.
July 18
At approximately 12:20 p.m., officers responded to the 11900 block of Old River School Rd. to assist the Downey Fire Department with a possible explosion. It was discovered the homeowner was using multiple bug bombs in their apartment to exterminate pests, but failed to shut off the gas pilot light. This resulted in an explosion that broke several windows. No other damage or injuries occurred.
