DOWNEY — The city council is considering renaming Downtown Downey streets to “celebrate the city’s history and culture,” according to a city staff report.

A discussion on potential name changes was on Tuesday’s city council agenda but was postponed to a later date.

Affected property owners will be surveyed before a decision is made, city officials wrote in a report to the council.

The city council will need to decide on the western limits of any name changes. Making Paramount Boulevard the western boundary would affect 93 properties located on 2nd, 3rd, 4th and New streets.

Extending the boundary further west to Old River School Road would impact 309 properties.

Each name change would cost the city about $1,000 per intersection for the purchase and installation of new street signs.

The city council first broached the idea of name changes on March 12, directing city staffers to research the renaming process.
