4 non-profits chosen to receive city grant funding

DOWNEY — The city of Downey will spend $57,500 of its yearly $100,000 Community Based Organization grant this year, divvying up the funds between four organizations.

Four grant requests were submitted this year, three of which – LA CADA, Downey Symphonic Society and PIH Health - were granted in full.

The fourth applicant, Mujeres En Construccion, was given $2,500 of the $20,000 it applied for due to the low number of Downey residents (10-15) it claimed to service.

The approved appropriations are:

  • $25,000 to LA CADA for its 2024 Downey Pride event

  • $15,000 to the Downey Symphonic Society to cover musician wages for its 2025 summer pops concert at Furman Park

  • $15,000 to PIH Health for its Substance Abuse Navigator program

  • $2,500 to Mujeres En Construccion for classes and workshops

The CBO grant was established last year to manage financial requests from various non-profits, community organizations and local groups. Applicants submit proposals and are selected based on their service to residents.
