SPORTS BRIEFS: Wrestling seasons end in Ontario

DOWNEY – The Downey High School wrestling season has come to an end. The Vikings qualified five wrestlers for the Master’s meet last Friday and Saturday at the Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario and all were eliminated before advancing to the state meet being held this weekend at the Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.

Jonathan Prata (106) went 0-2. Prata lost his first match to Ethan Diaz of San Jacinto 10-2. Prata lost his second match against Belal Akhras of Bloomington 7-0. Prata was eliminated from Master’s meet competition after finishing fifth at C.I.F. the week before.

Mark Lopez (113) went 3-2. Lopez lost his first match to Reece Galvan of Palm Desert 6-0. Lopez won his second match against Isaac Sechslingoff of Santa Maria 4-1. Lopez won his third match against Aaron Diaz of San Jacinto 7-0. Lopez won his fourth match against Jacob Ruvalcaba of Hillcrest by pin at the 4:48 mark of the third period. Lopez lost his fifth match to Oscar Covarrubias of Paso Robles 4-0. Lopez was finally eliminated from Master’s meet competition after finishing fifth at C.I.F. the week before.

Carlos Rivas (126) went 1-2. Rivas won his first match against Michael Cervantes of Mira Costa 6-4. Rivas lost his second match against Tod Stafford of Temescal Canyon 10-4. Rivas lost his third match to Cristian Rodriguez of Artesia 11-0. Rivas was eliminated from Master’s meet competition after finishing second at C.I.F. the week before.

Armando Padilla (132) went 0-2. Padilla lost his first to Christian Mateos of Temecula Valley 7-0. Padilla lost his second match against Christian Ramirez of Rowland 4-1. Padilla was eliminated from Master’s meet competition after finishing fifth at C.I.F. the week before.

Angel Baez lost his first match to Robert Knight of Newbury Park by pin at the 2:48 mark of the second period. Baez won his second match against Frank Molina of Antelope Valley by pin at the 2:19 mark of the second period. Baez lost his third match to V.J. Leuta of Servite by pin at the 2:35 mark of the second period.

Baez was eliminated from Master’s meet competition after finishing fourth at C.I.F. the week before.

The Warren High School wrestling season has come to an end.

The Bears qualified five wrestlers for the Master’s meet last Friday and Saturday at the Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario and all were eliminated before advancing to the state meet being held this weekend at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.

Adrian Duarte (120) went 1-2. Duarte lost his first match to Josh Koning of Royal 9-4. Duarte won his second match against Jose Trinidad Gomez of Canyon Springs by pin at the 1:37 mark of the first period. Duarte lost his third match to Diego Jimenez of Villa Park 4-1 and was eliminated from Master’s meet competition after finishing third at C.I.F. the week before.

Julian Gutierrez (160) went 0-2. Gutierrez lost his first match to Jacob Collins of Santa Ana Calvary Chapel 4-0 and lost his second match to Luke Matheny of Roosevelt 9-3. Gutierrez was eliminated from Master’s meet competition after finishing sixth at C.I.F. the week before.

Gabriel Rodriguez (170) went 1-2. Rodriguez lost his first match to Gordon Livermore of Servite 17-4. Rodriguez won his second match against Alex De La Cruz of Laguna Hills by pin at the :23 second mark of the first period. Rodriguez lost his third match to Jed Smith of Mater Dei 13-8. Rodriguez was eliminated from Master’s meet competition after finishing fourth at C.I.F. the week before.

Angel Luevanos (195) went 0-2. Luevanos lost his first match to Tristin Sutton of Hemet by pin at the 1:17 mark of the first period. Luevanos lost his second match to Brandyn Baker of Roosevelt 5-0. Luevanos was eliminated from Master’s meet competition after finishing sixth at C.I.F. the week before.

Alex Mendez (220) went 1-2. Mendez lost his first match to David Vanweems of Corona Centennial by pin at the 1:22 mark of the first period. Mendez won his second match against Garrett Granger of Troy 10-0. Mendez lost his third match to Orlando Ortega of Shadow Hills 9-7. Mendez was eliminated from Master’s meet competition after finishing sixth at C.I.F. the week before.

The Downey High School winter sports seasons have come to an end. The last teams competing in their respective sports were boys’ soccer and wrestling.

The boys’ soccer team (14-10-2) lost in the second round of the C.I.F. Division 1 playoffs on 2/25 to El Toro at Downey 1-1 (8-7) on penalty kicks after defeating St. John Bosco at St. John Bosco 2-1 on 2/20 in the first round.

The Downey wrestling team sent Jonathan Prata (106), Mark Lopez (113), Carlos Rivas (126), Armando Padilla (132) and Angel Baez (285) to the Master’s meet in Ontario after placing at C.I.F. the week before. No Downey wrestler qualified for the state meet in Bakersfield.

Boys’ basketball (18-9) lost in the first of the C.I.F. Division 1-AA playoffs to San Clemente at San Clemente 54-43 on 2/20. Girls’ basketball (15-12) lost to Great Oak at Great Oak in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 1-AA playoffs 47-38 on 2/21.

The girls’ soccer team (9-6-6) lost in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs to Brea-Olinda at Brea-Olinda 2-0 on 2/19. Girls’ water polo did not qualify for postseason play.

The winter sports teams will now give way to spring sports. Baseball, softball, boys’ golf, boys’ tennis, boys’ volleyball and track and field are up next.

The Warren High School winter sports seasons have come to an end. The last two teams competing in their respective sports, boys’ soccer and girls’ basketball, were both eliminated in the second round of C.I.F. playoff competition.

The boys’ soccer team (21-3-2) lost in the second round of the C.I.F. Division 1 playoffs on 2/25 to Edison of Huntington Beach at Edison 1-1 (5-4) on penalty kicks after defeating Ventura at Warren 4-0 in the first round on 2/20.

The girls’ basketball team (17-11) lost in the second round of the C.I.F. Division 1-AA playoffs on 2/25 to Millikan at Millikan 75-63 after defeating La Quinta at Warren 65-21 in the first round.

The Warren wrestling team sent Adrian Duarte (120), Julian Gutierrez (160), Gabriel Rodriguez (170), Angel Luevanos (195) and Alex Mendez to the Master’s meet in Ontario after placing at C.I.F. the week before. No Warren wrestler qualified for the state meet in Bakersfield.

Girls’ soccer (18-4-3) lost in the second round of the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs to Torrance at Torrance 2-0 on 2/24 after defeating Knight High School of Palmdale at Warren 2-0 in the first round.

Boys’ basketball (6-17) did not qualify for the C.I.F. Division 1-AA playoffs. Girls’ water polo (9-16) lost in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 4 playoffs to Crescenta Valley at Pasadena City College 9-8 on 2/19.
