1 dead in possible drug-related shooting

DOWNEY -- One person was killed and another wounded in a possible drug-related shooting Wednesday afternoon.

911 dispatchers received calls at around 5:24 p.m. reporting gun shots in the 12000 block of Downey Avenue. Not long after, witnesses reported a traffic collision at Stewart and Gray and Patton roads.

When officers arrived at the site of the shooting, they discovered one person dead in a parking lot.

Witnesses described a vehicle fleeing the shooting as a Gray Toyota Yaris, the same vehicle that was involved in the traffic collision. After the collision, three people fled from the car, witnesses told police.

Downey police officers quickly found two suspects, one of whom was suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive, police said.

The second male suspect was taken to the police station for questioning. The third suspect is still outstanding.

"It appears at this time that this crime is possibly drug-related and the subjects knew one another," police officials said in a statement. "This is an on-going investigation and there will be no further information released at this time."

The identity of the victim had not been released as of Thursday morning.
