'There Ought to Be a Law' contest for residents

DOWNEY - Assemblymember Cristina Garcia will be launching her first "There Ought to Be a Law" contest for residents of the 58th Assembly District. Constituents are invited to submit ideas and proposals for a new state law.Entries can cover a wide range of issues that can be addressed by legislation and will improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods throughout the state of California. The contest is open to residents of the 58th Assembly District and people of all ages are encouraged to enter. We highly encourage high school and college students in the 58th Assembly District to participate. "I want my constituents to have a voice and an opportunity to be a part of the process a bill idea goes through in Sacramento, "Garcia said. "I encourage my constituents to share with me their bill ideas, inspired by their daily experiences - ideas that will make California better." Previous contest entries, submitted to legislators across the state have included laws that have cracked down on misleading floral advertising, a bill that enables individuals who vote by mail to confirm that their ballots were counted and a measure that created a pilot program to link the state's community colleges with local chambers of commerce to promote business development and job creation. Assemblymember Garcia will choose one winner from the contest. The winner will have the opportunity to travel to Sacramento, testify before an Assembly Committee on the merits of the bill, and have lunch with Assemblymember Garcia. Submissions will be accepted by e-mail, mail or fax until Jan. 17.
