DOWNEY – City officials and loyal customers attended a ceremonial ribbon-cutting recently at the newly-renovated Second Tyme Around Shoppe in downtown Downey, where thrift shop sales help fund philanthropic programs by Assistance League of Downey. The Baptist and Mormon churches were “extremely helpful during the renovation,” officials said, with the Baptist church donating a storage room for two weeks and the Mormon Elders helping to retrieve everything from storage after construction.

Assisteens and their mothers came on a Saturday and packed and moved their store’s contents to the Baptist church. Gypsy Johnson members and their husbands moved remaining merchandise to the back of the store.

Walls came down, electrical outlets were repositioned, new paint, display racks and shelves covered the walls, and new carpeting completed the new look.

Much planning by Assistance League members enabled the renovation to be completed in two weeks.

The Assistance League of Downey is a nonprofit organization of volunteers who provide and administer philanthropic programs within the community. Among their programs is Operation School Bell, which provides new clothing to school children, and HOME (Housing of Medical Emergencies), a 10-unite apartment complex which serves relatives of patients at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center.
