Students recognized for art awards

DOWNEY – Three Downey High School students were honored at last week’s Board of Education meeting for winning art and photography awards.

Jocelyn Gutierrez beat out K-12 students from throughout the state in the 2014 California Streaming Digital Photography Contest. This year’s theme was “Inspiration.”

Dulce Zelaya and Brandi Kim won first and second place in Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard’s Student Art Competition, which included student artists from Downey, East Los Angeles, Commerce, Paramount, Bell

, Bell Gardens, Bellflower, Cudahy, Huntington Park and Maywood.

Zelay’s first-place pastel painting was titled “Unknown” and represented the unseen future.

Kim was recognized for her scratchboard and acrylic painting titled “Curious.” The painting was named after Kim’s first pet.

Zelay and Kim, who both graduated from Downey High two weeks ago, thanked their visual and performing arts teacher, Darrelle Nikaj, for motivating them and urging them to enter the competition.
