Students excel at state competition

DOWNEY – Seven DUSD students won gold medals at the SkillsUSA state championship competition held April 26-27 in San Diego. More than 1500 students competed in a wide variety of events that included engineering, film and video production, culinary arts, quiz bowl, computer assisted drafting, 3D animation, law enforcement, technical math, health occupations, construction technology, commercial photography, extemporaneous speaking, and sports therapy.

In addition to the gold medal winners, 21 Downey students earned silver medals and 18 students brought home bronze medals.

Of the 145 DUSD students that competed, 46 won either first, second, or third place in their respective categories.

The seven students that won gold medals will move on to the national championships being held June 23 in Kansas City.

Students that win gold at the national championships are invited to the international championships in Germany.
