Shawn Goodner: one cool kid

DOWNEY – Downey sixth-grader Shawn Goodner has been collecting towels, blankets, sheets, and newspapers the past five years for the SEAACA animal shelter. Last year, he also collected more than 100 eyeglasses and cases for the needy, which he donated to the Downey Lions Club.

A student at Downey Christian School, Shawn is also a Boy Scout with Troop 441 in Downey. He has earned his first class and is a member of the Order of the Arrow. He plans to become an Eagle Scout by the time he is 15.

On May 26, for the sixth year, Shawn participated in the Cypress Forest Lawn Memorial Day service along with his grandmother, Mary Hauk. They carried the wreath for the Spanish-American War.

This past November, Shawn won first place in the Downey Elks Lodge 2020 Hoop Shot contest, sinking 23 out of 25 free throws. He went on to win first place in the district and came in second at regionals.

Shawn, who wants to be a veterinarian, collects the eyeglasses, newspapers, towels and blankets mostly from family and friends, but also accepts donations from the public. To make a contribution, call his family at (562) 861-7464.
