Services held for Rosemary Meyer

DOWNEY – Rosemary Meyer, a longtime Downey resident heavily involved with Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, died April 11. She was born Oct. 26, 1935 to Florence Wozniak and Joseph Zayic in Perham, Minn. She was the oldest of four children and lived on a farm near the small town of Ogema, Minn.

She attended a one-room country school initially, then finished grade school in Ogema and attended high school in nearby Waubun, Minn., graduating as one of a class of 40 in 1953.Following high school, she moved to Detroit Lakes, Minn. to attend business college.

In the fall of 1957, her family moved to Huntington Park. Rosemary went to work for the Gas Company as an executive secretary. There she met her future husband, Ron Meyer.

They were married in 1962 at St. Matthias Church and lived in Huntington Park. Rosemary resigned from the Gas Company in 1964 and had five children over the next eight years.

The family moved to Downey in 1973 where Rosemary was very involved with Our Lady of Perpetual Help School and the Catholic Women’s Guild, filling various roles including secretary, two terms as president, co-chair of the Christmas Boutique, and taking reservations for the annual Christmas Luncheon, as well as donating her time and crafts as needed.

In 1983, she went to work for St. Joseph High School as the bookkeeper, retiring in 1999.

Rosemary was preceded in death by her sister, Janice Palmer Tinnesen and brother-in-law, Vince Hohman.

She is survived by her husband, Ron; children, Kathy Gjevre (Kristoffer), Richard Meyer, Jeff Meyer (Candace Gee), Michelle Ngai (Lim) and Theresa Meyer (Rich White); grandchildren, Erik Gjevre, Emily Gjevre, Harper Meyer-White, Maika Ngai and Noa Ngai; brother, Jim Zayic; sister, Karen Hohman; sisters-in-law, Sr. Juanita Meyer, Marilyn Costello and Pat Zayic; brother-in-law, Gary Palmer; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Downey and burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City.
