Sports briefs: winter sports wrapping up

DOWNEY - The Warren High School boys' soccer team traveled to Corona Centennial High School (16-3-4) yesterday for their quarterfinal game against the Huskies. The final score was not available at press time.The Bears advanced to the quarterfinal round of the C.I.F. Division 2 playoffs by defeating Sunny Hills 2-1 at Warren in the first round on 2/20 and then by defeating Alta Loma 2-1 at Warren on Tuesday in the second round. The Bears would face the winner of the Royal/Bloomington game in the semifinals next Tuesday should they defeat Corona Centennial. The Warren High School wrestling team qualified 11 of 14 wrestlers in their respective weight classes for C.I.F. Individual competition last Friday and Saturday at Temecula Valley High School. Warren placed 13th overall at C.I.F. Zac Brito (138) was the only Bear who placed in the top six. Brito placed sixth after being defeated by his opponent from Temescal Canyon. Only the top five wrestlers in each weight class qualified for the Master's meet at Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario today and tomorrow. The Warren High School boys' basketball team did not qualify for the C.I.F. Division 1AA playoffs. The Bears finished their season with an overall record of 6-19 and S.G.V.L. record of 1-9. The Bears will now turn their attention to the spring sports of baseball, golf, swimming, tennis, track and field and volleyball. *** The Warren High School girls' water polo team advanced to the C.I.F. Division 5 semifinal to face Crescenta Valley Wednesday at Whittier College. The Lady Bears defeated Arlington 14-6 at the Downey Aquatics Center on 2/19 in the first round and then defeated Santa Ynez 20-5 at Santa Ynez in the quarterfinal round. The Lady Bears would face the winner of the Riverside Poly/Redlands East Valley game in the final should they defeat Crescenta Valley. The Lady Bears currently have an overall record of 25-10 and were 10-0 in S.G.V.L. play. The Warren High School girls' soccer team lost in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 4 playoffs to Notre Dame Academy 4-0 at Notre Dame Academy last Friday. The Lady Bears' soccer season is now over. The Warren High School girls' basketball team lost in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 1AA playoffs to Agoura 64-45 at Agoura last Saturday. The Lady Bears finished their season with an overall record of 15-11 and S.G.V.L. record of 8-2. The Lady Bears will now turn their attention to the spring sports of softball, swimming and track and field. *** The Downey High School girls' soccer team advanced to the second round of the C.I.F. Division 4 playoffs to face Riverside Poly Wednesday (score unavailable at press time). The Lady Vikings defeated Colony 1-0 at Downey last Friday in their first round game. Riverside Poly defeated Estancia 0-0 (3-1 PK's) in their first round game. Downey would face the winner of the Sierra Canyon/South Torrance game in the quarterfinals should they win. The Lady Vikings are the defending C.I.F. Division 4 champions. The Downey High School girls' water polo team defeated Morro Bay 16-5 at Downey on 2/18 in a wildcard game. The Lady Vikings were then defeated by Crescenta Valley 13-3 at Crescenta Valley in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 5 playoffs. The Lady Vikings' season is now over. The Downey High School girls' basketball team lost to Great Oak of Temucula Valley 57-38 at Great Oak in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 1AA playoffs last Saturday. The Lady Vikings finished their season with an overall record of 14-13 and a S.G.V.L. record of 5-5. The Lady Vikings will now turn their attention to the spring sports of lacrosse, softball, swimming and track and field. *** The Downey High School wrestling team qualified 11 of 14 wrestlers in their respective weight classes to wrestle in C.I.F. Individual competition at Temecula Valley High School last Friday and Saturday. Of the eleven wrestlers who qualified for C.I.F, six placed in the top six of their weight classes. Mark Lopez (106) placed third after defeating his opponent from West Torrance. Dylan Moreno (152) placed fourth and Juan Soto (170) placed fourth. Stephen Chavez (182) placed fourth. Jorge Guerrero (195) placed sixth and heavyweight Anthony Florido (285) placed second after being defeated in the championship final. The top five in each weight class advanced to compete in the Master's Tournament at the Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario today and tomorrow. The top eight placers in each weight class at the Master's meet will advance to the state meet at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield next weekend. Downey took fourth place overall at C.I.F. Host Temecula Valley was first (241.5), Santa Ana Calvary Chapel was second (209), Temescal Canyon was third (190.5), Downey was fourth (154.5) and Alta Loma was fifth (144.5). Warren was 13th (77.5), Paramount was 20th (44) and Gahr was 24th (32.5). The Downey High School boys' basketball team was defeated by Roosevelt 72-58 at Roosevelt in the second round of the C.I.F. Division 1AA playoffs Tuesday evening. The Vikings advanced to the second round after defeating Upland 70-43 at Downey last Friday. Downey finished their season with an overall record of 23-6 and S.G.V.L. record of 9-1. The Downey High School boys' soccer team defeated Villa Park 3-1 at Downey on 2/18 in a wildcard game and were then defeated by Fullerton 0-0 (1-0 PK's) last Thursday at Fullerton in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 2 playoffs. The Vikings finished their season with an overall record of 17-7-4 and S.G.V.L. record of 6-3-1. Downey will now turn their attention to the spring sports of baseball, golf, lacrosse, swimming, tennis, track and field and volleyball.
