Sophie Giebler passes away at 97
DOWNEY - Longtime Downey resident Sophie Giebler passed away Jan. 19 at her Lesiure World residence in Seal Beach at the age of 97.She was born Oct. 1, 1916 in Los Angeles to Max and Bertha Scheid. She moved to Germany shortly after WWI with her family but returned to Los Angeles about four years later. She attended Los Angeles schools, graduating from Manual Arts High School in 1934. She married Neil Giebler in 1936. Sophie and Neil had two children: Karl, born in 1939, and Kristina, in 1944. They lived in the area of the Coliseum before moving to Downey in the early 1950s. Over the years, Sophie worked as a comptometer operator and in later years as office manager for Anderson Desk Company. She moved to Leisure World in 2004 and resided there until her passing. She was preceded in death by her husband, Neil, in 2001; son, Karl, in 1968; and daughter, Kristina, in 2003. She is survived by grandchildren Kira Spyrison (Will) of Ventura, Andrew Reichel of Seattle and Anthony Reichel (Kelley) of Chantilly, Va.; and great-grandchildren Izabella Reichel, Katelyn Reichel and Robert Reichel. A memorial service will be held at Leisure World in Clubhouse No. 3 on March 1 at noon.
