Jean Tuohino passes away
DOWNEY - Longtime Downey resident Jean Tuohino died Dec. 19 at Walnut Village in Anaheim. She was 91.She was born June 21, 1922, to Harold and Edith Chenoweth, and grew up in Omaha, Neb. She earned a B.A. in psychology from the University of Omaha in 1944 and an M.A. in educational psychology from the University of Kansas in 1949. She married Alvin Tuohino in 1949 and they moved to California, where they raised four children. Jean worked for many years for the Downey Unified and Los Nietos school districts, providing psychological evaluation services for students, and running programs for special needs and gifted students. She was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church of Downey and supported camping programs for all ages, serving on a Lutheran camp board of directors from 1968 through 1998. She is survived by her four children, Barbara (Russ) Funk, Larry (Swantje) Tuohino, Nancy Chapman and Kent (Valerie) Tuohino; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and her brother, Bob (Gloria) Chenoweth. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Alvin, who died in 2005 A memorial service was held Dec. 27 at Christ Lutheran Church of Downey.
