Library encourages summer reading
DOWNEY - The Downey City Library is offering a summer reading program for children, teens and adults.The children's program, "Dig Into Reading," is for kids up to age 12. The program encourages kids to read independently at home to earn prizes. The program runs until Aug. 3 and will feature special performances Thursdays at 2 p.m. from June 27 through Aug. 1. Registration begins June 24 in the library's Children's Room. The first 75 kids to sign-up each day from June 24-26 receive a balloon. "Beneath the Surface" is the theme of the teen reading program, which runs June 3 through July 27. Teens who register for the program can earn prizes for up to 12 hours of reading. Teens who complete the program are also eligible for a pizza party on July 26. Adults can sign up for their own reading program, "Groundbreaking Reads," to receive a book bingo card. After reading five books, adults can win gift baskets on display in the library lobby. For more information on any of the programs, call (562) 904-7360, ext. 132.
