Free food kits for seniors

DOWNEY - The Barbara J. Riley Community and Senior Center is now hosting the Healthy Edlerly Adults for Life (HEAL) program, which provides free food kits to low-income adults ages 60 and older.Offered jointly by the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and Downey's Parks & Recreation Department, the kits contain two canned fruits, two canned vegetables, one breakfast whole wheat item, one lunch whole wheat item and one protein item. Kits also include five pounds of fresh produce and yogurt. Age requirements are "self-certified" and no identification or income verification is required. The service is free to all participants. Food kits are distributed the last Tuesday of every month between 1-3 p.m. in the senior center's south parking lot. The first giveaway is April 30. For more information, call (562) 904-7223.
