Downey track teams set records

DOWNEY - The Downey High School boys' and girls' track team had several standout performances last weekend at the Arcadia Invitational Track and Field meet. Personal, as well as school records, were not just broken; but shattered.Interestingly, there are still duals and meets to compete in and there is a very strong possibility that more records will fall and new records will be set. Standout sophomore and cross-country runner Lisa Vasquez crushed her 3200 meter time by running a personal best of 10:51.78. This run marked the first time Vasquez had finished the 3200 meter event in under eleven minutes. Junior Tiffany Gilmore also crushed her own school record in the shot put by throwing 41' 4. Gilmore finished in ninth place overall. Coach Amy Overgaauw is extremely pleased with how hard Vasquez and Gilmore have worked to get to where they are and sees new records being broken and re-set this season. The Downey High School boys' sprint medley relay team also crushed the school record for a second time this season by running 3:29.57. This time is currently the best in the state and second best in the nation this year. Coach Bob Gleason is very pleased with how hard his relay team has worked and how well they are running as a team. Standout basketball player, high jumper and sprinter Dakari Archer is running one 200 meter leg, Ismael Guerrero is running the other 200 meter leg, Fabian Mendoza is running the 400 meter leg and Eric Enriquez closes the relay with the 800 meter run. It would not be shocking to Coach Gleason if the Viking medley relay team breaks their own record at a track and field meet soon. Things are certainly heating up in track and field.
