Downey Library lines up several events

DOWNEY - The Downey City Library will celebrate National Library Week (April 15-20) with a variety of free programs sponsored by the Friends of the Downey City Library.On Monday, author Julie Mammano will present "How I Wrote Six Children's Books" at a program that begins at 6:30 p.m. The creator of the popular "Rhino" picture books will discuss the writing process and her career as a published author. On Tuesday, children ages 3-5 and their parents can read with Mayor Mario Guerra at a preschool storytime from 10:30-11 a.m. The mayor will share some of his favorite picture books and children will make a special craft. On Wednesday, Guerra will present the same program in Spanish and English again at 10:30. Also on Wednesday, the library will begin its new series of money management workshops for adults starting at 6:30 p.m. Author Julie Mammano returns Thursday at 6:30 p.m. to present "Music and Literacy Come Together." Families with children ages 3-12 will learn the importance of reading and music. Finally, on April 20, the library is sponsoring a bus excursion to the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. The event on the USC campus features panel discussions, cooking demonstrations, entertainment and book-signing events with more than 400 authors.
