Cooling centers open for residents

DOWNEY - The Barbara J. Riley Community and Senior Center, along with the Downey City Library, are designated cooling centers for residents looking to escape the heat wave that is currently baking Southern California.Residents can also escape to the Columbia Memorial Space Center, although admission is $5. Residents outside Downey can dial 211 to find cooling centers near them. County health officials are warning residents not to leave children, elderly people or pets in parked cars. Residents should also drink plenty of water and avoid unnecessary sun exposure. Officials also recommend checking on neighbors who have limited mobility.
