Coloring contest announced for kids

DOWNEY - The Downey Emergency Preparedness Committee has announced its first annual coloring contest for children, encouraging kids to show their emergency preparedness creativity in colors, words and more.To participate, kids should decorate a coloring page that can be printed off the city's website at downeyca.org/gov/emergency/default.asp. Entries will be judged on "originality, creativity and whimsy." The contest will name two winners in three age categories: ages 6 and younger, ages 7-10 and ages 11-13. First and second place winners will have their artwork showcased at this year's Kids Day at Furman Park and on the city's emergency preparedness website. They will also be published in the Patriot and on the Downey Beat. The grand prize winner from each age group will receive a $60 gift card to Mambo Grill while the runner-up winner gets a $25 gift card. Prizes are sponsored by Coach Dan Latham. Deadline for entries is May 2. Winners will be chosen on or around May 3. Entries should be submitted to Zelda Ross at Downey City Hall or to any Downey fire station. The back of the artwork should include the child's name, age, parents' name and contact information, and parent's signature. Complete rules are posted on the city's website.
