Church to mark 100 years

MONTEBELLO - The 100th anniversary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel of Simons, Calif., will be celebrated July 6 at St. Benedict's Church in Montebello.Our Lady of Mt. Carmel was dedicated on July 6, 1913. At the time, the Tidings wrote, "Our Lady of Mount Carmel church, Simons, was the first of a series of churches to be established for the Mexican population of the Diocese." Twenty-two Mexicans from Simons would be confirmed that morning and Bishop Conaty was in attendance for the dedication. The land was donated by Arcadia Bandini de Baker in 1912, and Mexican workers built the church. Former members of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel are invited to the anniversary Mass, which begins at 6 p.m.
