Bears on 4-game winning streak

DOWNEY - The Warren High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 4-2 and are 2-0 in league play.Warren lost to Verdugo Hills, 5-4, on Feb. 25 and fell by the same 5-4 score against Long Beach Poly on March 11. Interestingly, in both of those games, Warren had a runner thrown out at the plate in the bottom of the 7th inning. In S.G.V.L. play, the Bears defeated cross-town rival Downey, 5-3, in their S.G.V.L. opener last Friday. Warren then swept a double header at Pioneer High School last Saturday, 6-5 and 5-1, respectively, and then defeated Dominguez Tuesday in a shortened game. The Bears are currently on a four-game win streak and will travel to Paramount and face the Pirates next Tuesday. The Bears finished last season with an overall record of 18-10 and a league record of 9-6, earning a wild card entry as the San Gabriel Valley League's No. 4 entry. Warren defeated West Covina, 7-5, in the wild-card game, then defeated Rancho Alamitos, 5-1, in the first round before finally losing to Lancaster in the second round of the C.I.F. Division III playoffs. Warren returns several key players from last year's squad. Senior RHP/3B Daniel Roman, Senior Catcher Mike San Angelo, Sophomore 2B Tony Monroy, Senior OF Daryl Donerson and Senior LHP Geoffrey Noonan all return with more experience and skill. The Bears also welcome freshman Dailin Lee and senior 1B/DH Rene Vega to the line-up. The Bears will also add Junior RHP/SS Alan Trejo, Junior 1B/RHP Eddie Enciso and Brandon Hernandez on April 1. First-year coach Scott Pearson said he is pleased with his team's progress and how hard they have worked. The Bears will certainly have an impact on the S.G.V.L. standings and a league title is in their sights.
