Assistance League recruiting new members
DOWNEY - In need of new members, the Assistance League of Downey has announced a new membership policy that reduces the financial obligation on members.Starting June 1, club members will be responsible only for their yearly dues. Volunteers are asked, however, to work one or two half-days in the club-owned Second Tyme Around thrift shop on Downey Avenue. The Assistance League of Downey is an all-volunteer chapter of National Assistance League. Their major philanthropies are Operation School Bell, which provides new clothing to needy students; HOME (Housing for Medical Emergencies), a 10-unit apartment complex adjacent to Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, which provides temporary, low-cost housing to families who have loved ones in rehabilitative care; and a dental program for children of low-income families that lack insurance and medical benefits. The Second Tyme Around Shop, located at 11026 Downey Ave., funds most of these philanthropies. A new membership coffee event will be held April 17.
