Two soloists to perform at symphony concert

DOWNEY - The Downey Symphony presents its first concert of the new year on Saturday, Jan. 26, with music that bridges the old and the new, sort of like what we're doing with our calendars and our lives these days.One work on the program was written 300 years ago. It will be played by an emerging talent, trumpeter Conrad Jones, born 22 years ago. It's a very good fit. Under Music Director Sharon Lavery, the concert titled "Simple Pleasures" features the orchestra's strings, and includes a delightful divertimento by Mozart, Benjamin Britten's Simple Symphony and Aaron Copland's Quiet City. The Copland calls for two virtuoso soloists, and we have Conrad on trumpet and the orchestra's Catherine Del Russo on English horn, a twofer made in heaven. Downey's fine theater is the site, at 8435 Firestone Blvd., where tickets are available at the box office, $35, $30 and $10 for students. Performance time on the 26th is 8 p.m., and you will enjoy the pre-concert discussion of the evening's music at 7:15. Wine will be served in the lobby and Symphony Guild refreshments at intermission on the patio. Parking is close to the theater and free.
