Traffic signal planned near East Middle School

DOWNEY - Plans are moving forward to install a traffic signal at Woodruff Avenue and Via Amorita to protect the hundreds of neighborhood kids who walk to East Middle School. School administrators asked the city for help due to the daily crush of students and cars that create gridlock for local residents before and after school. "We've had several kids injured at that location," said Councilman Roger Brossmer.

A survey by public works staff found that about 8,100 vehicles travel Woodruff Avenue near East Middle School on weekdays, in addition to about 700 pedestrians, mostly school-age children.

City and school officials hope a traffic signal better protects students as they cross the intersection to and from school. A crossing guard will remain in place.

The traffic light will include video detection cameras allowing city workers to monitor traffic from City Hall and LED pedestrian countdowns. Crews will install curb ramps and new striping as well.

The total cost is estimated at nearly $195,000 and will be paid for using federal highway safety funds. Construction is expected to start in March after the city selects a contractor. The traffic signal should be fully installed before the new school year begins in September.
