Downey wrestlers win John Glenn team title

DOWNEY - The Downey High School wrestling team participated in their third wrestling tournament in the past five weekends.The Vikings competed in the Long Beach Poly Jackrabbit Tournament Dec. 8 and followed that up by hosting the Downey Viking Invitational Dec. 14-15. The Vikings were getting geared up for cross-town rival Warren and the rest of the San Gabriel Valley League with a final tune-up at the John Glenn Tournament in Norwalk this past weekend. The Vikings competed in and won the John Glenn team title with a score of 195.5. The Vikings had two individual champions and two runner-ups. In other words, Downey had four wrestlers wrestling in their respective weight class finals. Daniel Martinez (126) and Anthony Florido (220) were both tournament champions and Antonio Santana (145) and Juan Soto (152) were both finalists who finished second. Daniel Martinez defeated Charles Ibo of Channel Islands 4-0 and Anthony Florido defeated James Rivera of Arroyo 2-0 to take their respective weight class titles. Antonio Santana was defeated by Clancey Baker of Long Beach Poly 8-1 in the 145 pound final and Juan Soto was also runner-up at 152.
