Yolanda Arnold and Miji Vellakkatel spoke with Downey Adult School’s Advanced ESL students

Yolanda Arnold and Miji Vellakkatel came from the LA District Attorney’s Office to speak with Downey Adult School’s Advanced ESL students about domestic violence. Yolanda, the wife of DUSD teacher Russ Arnold, has been a paralegal for the Violent Crimes Division for over 25 years; she works closely with Deputy District Attorney Miji Vellakkatel. Both are shown in the picture.

The presentation was during the evening ESL class, so both generously gave of their time to come after work & speak to the class. They showed a Power Point presentation about the definition of domestic violence, the cycle of domestic  violence, and resources for victims. Mr. Vellakkatel spoke about domestic violence laws in California and the consequences of these crimes.

Mr. Arnold, who is also a night supervisor at the Adult School, told Julie Meuret-Kalousek about his wife’s job; the teacher contacted Yolanda Arnold and she eagerly agreed to come to the class. She surprised the class by bringing Mr. Vellakkatel. His engaging presentation kept 55 students listening closely to every word.

A question and answer period followed the presentation, which wrapped up a night full of important  and practical information.  Both of these speakers are passionate about their jobs and it showed!
